Cellutone Q&A. Everything you want to know.

What is Cellulite?

Approximately 80 to 98 percent of women and 10 percent of men who have experienced puberty will have cellulite. Cellulite usually affects individuals after age 20 but can affect teenagers too. Cellulite is a common harmless skin condition that causes bumps or lumpy, dimpled flesh.

This skin condition typically appears in body areas that accumulate fat, such as arms, legs, thighs, hips, buttocks, and abdomen. You may also notice cellulite on your "love handles," areas of excess fat. Although excess fat can build anywhere on the body, the lower waist and back tend to be the most affected. Your skin may appear to have a "cottage cheese" or "orange peel texture."

Cellulite Causes

If you have cellulite, the body fat deep beneath the skin pushes against the mesh-like web of surrounding connective tissue. The pressure forces the fat against the top layers to create an appeal that resembles cottage cheese with an "orange peel" texture.

Also, fibrous bands connecting your skin to the underlying muscle tighten irregularly. This tightening pulls your skin down while the layer of fat pushes upward. As a result, you may experience dimpling.

The bands connecting women's skin to the tissue and deep muscle layers crisscross in men and run parallelly equal distances apart in women. The parallel bands may show more dimpling than crisscross bands.

While gaining weight can contribute to the prominence of cellulite, the presence is primarily genetic.

Even skinny people can have cellulite. Cellulite may also be caused by:
  • Hormones, such as estrogen, insulin, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and prolactin, are part of the cellulite production process.

  • As estrogen decreases, fat cells enlarge, and blood flow to the connective tissue under the skin declines. Lower circulation leads to less oxygen in the area, resulting in reduced collagen production. These combine to enhance the visibility of fat deposits. Dimpling appears as the fat under the skin protrudes through the weakening connective tissue.

  • Age causes the skin to become less elastic, thinner, and more likely to sag, increasing the chance of cellulite development.

  • Overeating carbohydrates, salt, and too little fiber lead to greater amounts of cellulite.

  • Pregnancy may exacerbate cellulite temporarily because weight and body changes become more noticeable.

The 4 Grades of Cellulite

There are four grades of cellulite.

  • Grade 0: You don't have cellulite.
  • Grade 1: Your skin is smooth when you stand up. When sitting down, you may have skin sagging and between one and four mild bumps, lumps, or dimples creating a mild "orange peel appearance."
  • Grade 2: Your skin has between five and nine moderate bumps, lumps, or dimples when standing up or sitting down. Your skin may convey a "cottage cheese" appearance.
  • Grand 3:  Your skin has ten or more severe bumps, lumps, or dimples when standing up or sitting down. Your skin also has deep peaks and valleys.
