Picosecond precision for stubborn pigment

PICO Genesis represents a generational leap in laser technology for pigmentation. It is a pico laser treatment that delivers energy in ultra-short picosecond pulses — one trillionth of a second. Traditional nanosecond lasers deliver energy in billionths of a second; picosecond lasers are roughly 1,000 times faster. At nanosecond speeds, much of the laser energy converts to heat, which can damage surrounding tissue and trigger rebound darkening. At picosecond speeds, the energy creates a photoacoustic (pressure-wave) effect that shatters pigment mechanically, without generating significant heat.

The shattered pigment breaks into particles so small that the body's lymphatic system clears them naturally, while the photoacoustic energy triggers collagen and elastin renewal. We deliver PICO Genesis on the Cutera enlighten III picosecond platform, the same laser that powers our enlighten laser tattoo removal program.

What the mechanism buys you

  • More precise pigment destruction — the laser targets the melanin while minimizing impact on the surrounding skin.
  • Smaller particle sizes — shattered pigment particles are small enough for the body to clear efficiently.
  • Lower risk of rebound pigmentation — less thermal damage means less inflammation, and less chance of triggering new pigment production in conditions like melasma.
  • Safety across skin tones — the photoacoustic mechanism works on Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI, including the darker complexions that many heat-based lasers cannot treat safely.

For patients with both residual pigment and textured scarring, Pico Genesis FX — the fractionated mode using a Micro Lens Array — remodels scar tissue and clears pigment in the same session. Results are long-lasting — often in fewer sessions than older nanosecond lasers require.

Sunspots & age spots

The flat, brown patches that accumulate on sun-exposed skin — face, hands, chest, shoulders — respond quickly to PICO Genesis: many patients see noticeable fading after 1–2 sessions as the shattered melanin clears. For individual spots we work with surgical accuracy — see our dark spots and sun damage guides.

Melasma

Melasma is one of the most challenging pigmentation conditions to treat because it is driven by hormones and can worsen with aggressive laser treatment. PICO Genesis is one of the few lasers we trust for melasma because its photoacoustic mechanism minimizes the thermal inflammation that triggers rebound. We use conservative, melasma-specific settings and layer treatments carefully over a series of sessions.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) & dark spots

The dark marks left behind by acne, eczema, rashes, or injury can linger for months or years. PICO Genesis is one of our most effective tools for clearing PIH — and because it is safe for darker skin tones, where hyperpigmentation is most visible, it fills a gap that many other lasers cannot.

Freckles & uneven skin tone

For patients who want to clear scattered freckling or achieve an overall brighter, more uniform complexion, PICO Genesis delivers a full-face or full-body "skin clarity reset" that improves both pigment and tone simultaneously.

Acne scars & texture

While PICO Genesis is primarily a pigment laser, the collagen stimulation triggered by its photoacoustic energy also helps improve the texture and appearance of acne scars. For patients with both residual acne pigment and scarring, PICO Genesis treats both concerns in the same session.

Two Genesis treatments, two different jobs

Patients searching for laser genesis in Miami often mean one of two treatments we offer in Brickell. PICO Genesis is the picosecond pigment laser — built for sun spots, melasma, and uneven tone. Laser Genesis is a gentle, non-ablative 1064-nm laser facial that warms the upper dermis without breaking the skin — the workhorse for diffuse redness and overall skin resurfacing without downtime.

What a Laser Genesis facial treats

  • Redness & rosacea — Laser Genesis for redness can soften the diffuse flushing associated with rosacea over a series.
  • Large pores — Laser Genesis for pores stimulates collagen around the pore structure, refining the surface.
  • Fine lines — Laser Genesis for fine lines builds gradual collagen support, without needles or peeling.
  • Glow — no downtime, so it's a favorite before events.

Many plans alternate the two: PICO Genesis clears pigment, Laser Genesis calms redness and polishes texture between sessions. Both live in our broader face & body laser lineup.

Why it suits all skin types

Because PICO Genesis shatters pigment with pressure rather than heat, it is safe and effective for Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI — including darker complexions where heat-based lasers carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It is the go-to laser for pigment correction in our most complex pigmentation cases.

Who's a good candidate

  • Those with melasma, sun damage, sunspots, age spots, freckles, or uneven skin tone
  • Anyone seeking brighter, clearer skin without downtime
  • Patients with acne scars or stubborn post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • All skin types and tones, including darker complexions
  • Patients committed to daily sun protection to maintain results

What we screen for

  • Active infection, cold sores, or open lesions in the treatment area — deferred until resolved.
  • Recent suntan or planned intense sun exposure — we time sessions around it.
  • Pregnancy, recent isotretinoin use, photosensitizing medications, keloid-prone scarring — discussed individually.

If your pigment comes with vascular concerns — redness, broken capillaries — we may recommend pairing or substituting Lumecca IPL, which addresses pigment and vascular targets simultaneously. Every treatment is performed by a licensed medical provider after an individual evaluation — meet the team.

Right after your session

PICO Genesis has essentially no required downtime. Mild redness may appear for a few hours and resolves on its own — no peeling, no blistering, no wound care. You can apply makeup and return to your normal routine immediately, and resume exercise and outdoor activities the same day (with SPF).

The first week

  • Pigmented areas often darken slightly before naturally flaking off over the following days — no picking or scrubbing.
  • Avoid retinoids and strong exfoliants for 2–3 days post-treatment.

Protecting your results

Over months 1–3, collagen stimulation from the photoacoustic energy continues to improve skin quality — firmer texture, smaller pores, smoother surface.

  • Daily SPF 30+ is non-negotiable — UV exposure is the primary trigger for pigment formation, and freshly treated skin is especially vulnerable in Miami sun.
  • Antioxidant serums (vitamin C, niacinamide) layered under sunscreen enhance pigment prevention.
  • Maintenance sessions once or twice per year help keep pigment from rebuilding.

What we pair it with

PICO Genesis delivers strong standalone results; combining it with complementary treatments amplifies the outcome:

  • Chemical peels — VI Peels brighten surface tone and exfoliate between laser sessions, accelerating clearance.
  • Lumecca IPL — Pico for deep or stubborn spots, IPL for broad-area pigment and vascular correction.
  • Facials — a HydraFacial between sessions keeps skin hydrated and glowing as pigment clears.
  • Body lasers — extending treatment to the chest, shoulders, hands, and arms for comprehensive sun-damage reversal.
  • SkinPen microneedling — collagen induction when scarring outweighs pigment.

Our team coordinates these combinations at your skin consultation so every session builds on the last.

Not sure which laser your pigment needs? A skin consultation identifies the cause of your pigment first — then maps it to PICO Genesis, Laser Genesis, IPL, a peel, or a combination.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Most patients see significant results after 2–3 sessions, though more may be recommended depending on the severity of pigmentation. Sessions are typically spaced 3–4 weeks apart.

Yes. PICO Genesis is safe and effective for all skin tones, including darker complexions that may not be suitable for other laser technologies.

Each session typically takes 20–30 minutes, making it easy to fit into a lunch break.

Most patients report minimal discomfort. The sensation is often described as mild warmth or tingling — some compare it to a light rubber-band snap. No topical anesthetic is typically needed.

Results are often visible after the first session, with continued improvements over the weeks following each treatment as pigment naturally breaks down and collagen rebuilds.

Yes. Because there is no required downtime, you can apply makeup and return to your normal routine immediately after treatment.

At Miami Skin Spa, PICO Genesis facial spot treatments start at $300 per session, a full-face session is $450, and a 3-session face package is $1,200. Laser Genesis facials start at $300. Itemized quote at your consultation — see our pricing page.

PICO Genesis is a picosecond laser that shatters pigment photoacoustically — best for sun spots, melasma, and uneven tone. Laser Genesis is a gentle non-ablative 1064-nm laser facial that warms the dermis — best for diffuse redness, large pores, and fine lines. We offer both in Brickell and often alternate them in one plan.

Yes. A Laser Genesis facial gently heats the upper dermis, which can soften the diffuse redness associated with rosacea, refine the appearance of pores, and smooth fine lines over a series of treatments — with no downtime.

PICO Genesis is one of the few lasers we trust for melasma because its photoacoustic mechanism minimizes the thermal inflammation that can trigger rebound pigmentation. We use conservative, melasma-specific settings as part of a broader plan — melasma is a managed condition, not a one-treatment fix.
