What a chemical peel session looks like
Everything you’d ask at the consult
Controlled exfoliation, from the surface down
A chemical peel is a treatment where a specially formulated solution is applied to the skin, causing the top layers to peel off over several days. The process removes the dead skin cells that make your complexion look dull and tired, and it stimulates the growth of new skin cells rich in collagen — improving texture, firmness, and tone. For peels, lasers, and microneedling side by side, see our skin resurfacing guide.
The peel depth taxonomy
- Superficial peels — gentle glycolic or salicylic acid formulas that refresh the outermost layer. Milder peels usually have a quicker recovery time but might need to be repeated more often to maintain results — popular for a pre-event brightening boost.
- Medium peels — the VI Peel family lives here: a blended TCA, retinoic acid, salicylic acid, and phenol formula that penetrates deeper for meaningful change in tone and texture with a manageable 5–7 day peeling window.
- Deep peels — stronger peels offer more dramatic results but also come with a longer recovery period — reserved for select candidates after evaluation.
What it feels like on the face
You might feel a tingling or slight stinging sensation — this is normal and passes quickly. The old layer of skin then gradually peels away, and the new skin that appears is usually smoother and less wrinkled — which is why peels are a great option for treating blemishes, age spots, and uneven skin tones.
Pigment: dark spots, sunspots & melasma
Pigment correction is the VI Peel’s signature strength. By suppressing unwanted pigment and promoting rapid cell turnover, the Precision Plus formula targets hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and melasma, helping the skin return to a healthier, more even state. It also anchors our age spot removal protocols.
Acne & acne scars
For breakouts, peels exfoliate clogged pores, reduce oil, and calm inflammation — often a first-line option in our acne treatment plans. They also fade textural scarring and post-inflammatory pigmentation; deeper acne scars may need remodeling at depth alongside the peel series.
Texture, fine lines & dullness
By accelerating cell renewal and stimulating collagen, peels smooth rough patches and soften fine lines and wrinkles, restoring radiance to dull, tired-looking skin.
Body skin: back, chest, arms & legs
The VI Body Peel extends the same approach below the jawline — sun damage on the back, chest, arms, and legs, body hyperpigmentation, rough or uneven texture, plus support for stretch marks and scar removal plans. Back chemical peels are among our most requested body treatments. Like our facial peels, the body peel is customizable by skin type and area, so a wide range of clients can benefit.
VI Peel — Advanced: combat signs of aging
Designed to tackle aging signs: its blend of ingredients penetrates the skin to soften fine lines and wrinkles, enhance cellular turnover, and stimulate collagen production — improving skin tone, texture, and collagen health.
VI Peel — Precision Plus: address pigmentation issues
Tailored for pigmentation problems: it works to suppress unwanted pigment and promote rapid cell turnover. Particularly beneficial for hypopigmentation and discoloration, helping you work toward an even, bright skin tone.
VI Peel — Purify with Precision Plus: acne and scarring
For those struggling with acne and acne scars: this formula focuses on helping clear active acne, fading textural scarring, and reducing post-inflammatory pigmentation caused by breakouts.
VI Body Peel: face-grade results for the body
A medical-grade chemical peel designed to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin on body areas such as the back, chest, arms, and legs — the same VI Peel philosophy, offered in small and large treatment areas.
PRX Perfexion & the acid toolbox
We also offer PRX Perfexion, a no-peel TCA biorevitalization that firms and brightens without visible flaking. Across the menu, the working ingredients are the classic peel acids — TCA (trichloroacetic acid), glycolic acid, salicylic acid, retinoic acid, and phenol — blended to match your skin type and concern. Formulation details are published by the manufacturer, VI Peel (Vitality Institute).
Safe for all skin types — including sensitive skin
The VI Peel is specifically formulated to be safe for all skin types, including sensitive skin. Its blended, buffered formula was developed with deeper skin tones in mind — important in Miami, where Fitzpatrick type IV–VI skin can react to aggressive resurfacing with rebound post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
How we keep pigment safe
- Peel strength and formula are chosen at consultation — never a one-size protocol.
- For melanin-rich skin and melasma, we favor the pigment-suppressing Precision Plus pathway and conservative sequencing.
- Strict sun protection before and after treatment — new skin is UV-vulnerable.
What we screen for
- Active skin infections, cold-sore outbreaks, or open lesions in the treatment area — treatment is deferred until resolved.
- Recent isotretinoin use, keloid-prone scarring, and conditions that impair wound healing — discussed individually.
- Pregnancy and nursing — most medium-depth peels are deferred.
Every peel at Miami Skin Spa is performed by a licensed provider after an individual evaluation — meet the team.
How many peels you’ll need
Facial VI Peels are most often planned as a series of three, spaced about eight weeks apart, for tone, texture, and collagen. The VI Body Peel is generally recommended every 4-6 weeks for optimal results; superficial maintenance peels can be repeated more frequently. Your provider maps the series at your consultation.
Recovery, day by day
- Day 0: Most clients resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. Mild redness or tightness is common.
- Days 3–7: The skin begins to peel, revealing fresh, renewed skin underneath. Peeling typically lasts between 5-7 days; deeper peels may require up to a week of healing.
- Weeks 2–6: Results become visible as peeling progresses and continue to improve for several weeks.
Aftercare rules that protect your result
- Do not pick, pull, or exfoliate peeling skin — let it shed on its own schedule.
- Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer; pause retinoids and acids until the skin settles.
- Regardless of peel strength, sunscreen is essential to protect your fresh skin from UV exposure.
Our team provides detailed aftercare instructions to help your results last — smoother, brighter skin that many clients enjoy for several months.
What we pair peels with
Chemical peels refine the canvas other treatments work on. Depending on your goals, our team may pair or alternate a peel series with:
- A HydraFacial for deep cleansing and hydration between peels — glow without downtime.
- SkinPen microneedling for collagen-induction work on texture and scars when exfoliation alone isn’t enough.
- Morpheus8 RF remodeling for deeper laxity and scarring — the peel handles surface tone while RF works at depth.
- Pico Genesis and Lumecca IPL for stubborn pigment — peels maintain laser results between sessions; see all laser treatments.
- Customized facials for ongoing maintenance — many clients alternate a chemical peel and facial on a rotating schedule once their series is complete.
Not sure which is right for you? Start with a skin consultation — our team will match you to the right peel strength and formula.
Not sure which peel — or whether a peel is the right tool at all? Bring your concern, not a treatment name. A skin consultation maps your skin type and goals to the right plan — a VI Peel series, a HydraFacial, energy-based resurfacing, or a combination.
Chemical peels vs the alternatives
All four refresh tone and texture — the difference is mechanism, depth, and downtime. We offer all of them, so the recommendation is based on your skin.
| Treatment | How it works | Best for | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| VI Chemical Peel | Blended acid solution exfoliates the outer skin layers and accelerates cell turnover | Pigment, acne, post-acne marks, tone, fine lines — face and body | 5–7 days of visible peeling |
| HydraFacial | Vortex cleansing, gentle exfoliation, extraction, and serum infusion | Hydration, glow, and congestion with zero recovery | None |
| SkinPen microneedling | Fine needles prompt collagen induction at the skin’s surface | Texture, fine lines, and acne scars needing collagen remodeling | 24–48 hours of redness |
| Pico Genesis laser | Picosecond light energy shatters pigment beneath the surface | Stubborn sun spots and pigment that peels alone can’t clear | Minimal — mild redness |
