What a wrinkle relaxer session looks like
Everything you'd ask at the consult
Relaxing the muscle that folds the skin
Wrinkle relaxers are injectable neurotoxins — Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Xeomin® — that temporarily relax the facial muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles. Every time you frown, squint, or raise your brows, the underlying muscle contracts and folds the skin above it. Over years, those repeated folds etch into lines that stay visible even at rest. A small, precisely placed dose blocks the nerve signal to that specific muscle, so the skin above it smooths and softens while the rest of your face keeps moving naturally.
An injectable treatment typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. A numbing cream may be applied for added comfort, then the chosen product — Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin — is administered with a fine needle into the targeted muscles. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick pinch and return to normal activities the same day. For the full anatomy of how repeated expression etches lines into the skin, see our in-depth guide to fine lines and wrinkles.
Started early, used as a long-term strategy
- Preventative softening — started early and maintained consistently, relaxers can help keep dynamic lines from etching deeper into the skin over time.
- Conservative dosing — we dose to soften, not to freeze, and review you for a follow-up touch-up when needed rather than over-treating at the first visit.
- Muscle-by-muscle precision — targeting one muscle without affecting the neighbors you want to keep moving is what keeps the result looking rested rather than done.
Frown lines, forehead & crow's feet
The three most-requested areas are the frown lines (the "11s") between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead wrinkles, and the crow's feet at the outer corners of the eyes. These are the classic dynamic wrinkles and expression lines that respond most predictably to a neuromodulator — softer at rest within days, fuller effect at two weeks.
Brow lift, lip lines & expression lines
Beyond the upper face, a relaxer can create a subtle brow lift for a more open, lifted eye area, soften vertical lip lines and other fine expression-driven creases, and refine the lines around the mouth that deepen with smiling and pursing. Each area is mapped to your own movement pattern at the consultation — the same lines respond differently from face to face.
Skin firmness & the etched-line transition
Relaxers address the dynamic component of a line — the part driven by muscle movement. When a crease has already etched into the skin at rest, we often pair the relaxer with a skin-quality treatment to address skin firmness and texture, and with dermal fillers where a deep static fold needs structural support. The relaxer stops the line from deepening; the partner treatment smooths what's already there.
When a relaxer alone isn't enough
For volume loss, hollowing, or significant skin laxity, a relaxer is the wrong tool on its own — those need filler, biostimulators, or energy-based skin tightening. We'll tell you honestly when that's the case rather than chasing a static fold with a muscle relaxer.
Botox® Cosmetic
Botox is the original injectable neurotoxin and has the longest clinical track record of any neuromodulator. It is precise and slow-spreading, which makes it an excellent choice when we want to target a specific muscle without affecting nearby muscles you actually want to keep moving. For many patients it is the first relaxer they try because the result is reliable and predictable in experienced hands.
Dysport®
Dysport is a fast-acting neurotoxin that diffuses more easily than the alternatives, which makes it well suited to larger zones such as a wide forehead or broad crow's feet, where a blended, gradient softening looks most natural. Patients who choose Dysport often appreciate a slightly faster onset of visible results.
Xeomin®
Xeomin is a highly purified, "naked" neurotoxin — free from the accessory proteins found in some other formulations. That makes it a great option for patients who have noticed diminishing results from Botox or Dysport over time, anyone who prefers a minimalist formulation, and those new to injectables who want a clean, well-tolerated starting point. Xeomin treats the same dynamic wrinkles — frown lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet.
How we choose between them
There is no universal "best" wrinkle relaxer — only the best one for your facial anatomy, your goals, and how your muscles actually move. At your consultation we assess your movement patterns, review your history with relaxers including any past sensitivity or diminished response, and recommend Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin — or a combination — with a personalized dosing plan.
Common, short-lived effects
The most common side effects are mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, which usually subside within a few days. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, there is little to no downtime — most patients return to work, the gym, or social plans the same day.
Who's a candidate
Ideal candidates for injectable wrinkle relaxers are people whose primary concern is dynamic expression lines rather than volume loss or laxity. In practice that's people who:
- Seek a non-surgical solution for dynamic facial wrinkles
- Want subtle, natural-looking refreshment without downtime
- Are in good health and want a safe, effective alternative to invasive procedures
- Want to begin preventatively at the first signs of dynamic lines, or maintain results from previous treatments
What we screen for
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding — treatment is deferred.
- Certain neuromuscular conditions and known allergies to a product's components — discussed individually.
- Active skin infection or breakout in the treatment area — we wait until it resolves.
Every injection at Miami Skin Spa is placed by a licensed medical provider after an individual evaluation — meet the team.
The first 24 hours
You may experience slight redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, which usually subsides within a few days. General aftercare guidance we share with patients:
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for the first 24 hours.
- Skip intense exercise, hot yoga, saunas, and steam rooms for the rest of the day.
- Stay upright for several hours after treatment.
- Hold off on facials, microneedling, and other skin treatments until your provider clears you.
As your results develop
Results begin to appear within 3–7 days, with full effect visible at two weeks. Most patients return to their normal day-to-day activities immediately. Reach out to our team with any questions as your results settle in — and we'll review you for a follow-up touch-up where one is worth it.
Maintenance
Results typically last 3–6 months. Maintaining on a consistent schedule is what compounds the preventative benefit over the years, keeping dynamic lines from etching deeper. Where a line has already settled into the skin at rest, we'll revisit skin firmness options at your follow-up.
What we pair it with
Wrinkle relaxers handle movement; other tools handle volume, structure, and skin quality. Many of our patients combine a relaxer with one of the following for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation:
- Dermal fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane to restore volume and support deep static folds the relaxer can't smooth on its own.
- Biostimulators like Sculptra and Radiesse, which stimulate collagen for gradual, longer-horizon rejuvenation.
- SkinVive by Juvéderm for smoother, more hydrated cheek skin — a skin-quality layer that completes the look without adding volume.
- Morpheus8 RF microneedling when etched lines and laxity call for collagen remodeling alongside muscle relaxation.
Sequencing matters — some pairings happen in the same visit, others alternate between sessions. Your plan is built at the consultation. Compare every injectable side by side on our injectables & fillers hub.
Not sure which relaxer is right for you? Bring your concern, not a product name. A consultation maps your facial movement and goals to the right plan — whether that's Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or a combination with fillers or biostimulators.
Relaxers vs the alternatives
Relaxers treat movement; the alternatives treat volume, structure, and skin quality. We offer every option below, so the recommendation is based on your face, not the product we happen to stock.
| Treatment | What it does | Best for | Onset | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wrinkle relaxers | Relax the muscle that folds the skin | Dynamic frown lines, forehead, crow's feet | 3–7 days | 3–6 months |
| Dermal fillers | Add volume and structure under the skin | Volume loss, deep static folds, contour | Immediate | 9–18 months |
| Biostimulators | Stimulate your own collagen over time | Diffuse volume loss, gradual rejuvenation | Weeks–months | Up to 2 years |
| SkinVive by Juvéderm | Microdroplet HA for skin smoothness | Cheek skin quality, hydration, glow | A few days | Up to 6 months |
Why our Brickell injectors
A relaxer result is decided by where each unit lands and how much goes in. At Miami Skin Spa every injection is placed by a licensed cosmetic injector who treats neuromodulators daily — dosing conservatively first and escalating only where your muscles show they can take more.

Start from your concern
Wrinkle relaxers most often start from a concern like wrinkles and anti-aging. Each guide below covers the full picture for that concern — what works, what doesn't, and where relaxers fit among the options.
