What a laser treatment session looks like
Everything you'd ask at the consult
Two mechanisms: chromophore-targeted heat and photoacoustic pulses
Every laser skin treatment works by delivering light energy the skin converts into change. Most platforms are chromophore-targeted — the wavelength is chosen so the energy is absorbed by a specific target (melanin pigment, hemoglobin in vessels, or water in the dermis) and converted to controlled heat that clears the target or stimulates repair. Picosecond lasers add a second mechanism: photoacoustic energy. Pulses delivered in trillionths of a second shatter pigment particles mechanically rather than by heat alone, which is what makes them so effective for stubborn hyperpigmentation that older lasers struggled to clear.
Wavelength and pulse width — the two numbers that matter
Lasers are characterized by two main features: wavelength and pulse width. The wavelength determines what kind of energy is absorbed into the skin, while the pulse width is the rate at which the energy is delivered. The shorter the wavelength, the less it penetrates; a shorter pulse width is better for smaller, more precise targets.
- Nd:YAG (used in Laser Genesis) — stimulates collagen regrowth by gently heating the layers underneath the skin. This improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, tightens pores, reduces oil production, and resurfaces the skin while reducing redness. Patients often find it very soothing.
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) — uses many different wavelengths of light to treat an area. Because the light scatters, IPL causes significantly less damage to the skin's surface while still reaching the dermis underneath, making it especially effective for pigmentation and vascular concerns.
- Picosecond lasers (Pico) — deliver energy in trillionths of a second, shattering pigment with photoacoustic energy rather than heat alone, while also stimulating collagen.
Ablative vs. non-ablative laser skin resurfacing
Ablative lasers vaporize small portions of the skin's outer layer; they are highly effective for visible signs of aging, acne scarring, pigmentation irregularities, and unwanted lesions, but they are more invasive and require a longer recovery — typically one to two weeks. Non-ablative lasers leave the surface intact and work in the tissue beneath, and fractional approaches pinpoint specific zones rather than treating the entire area, so the skin heals much faster with fewer complications. All three of our facial laser platforms are non-ablative — that's why laser resurfacing here comes with such minimal downtime. For the full taxonomy of resurfacing options, see our skin resurfacing guide.
Pigment & sun damage
Lasers are the workhorse for sun damage — sunspots, freckles, and the mottled tone Miami sun leaves behind. Broad-spectrum light lifts dark spots and age spots in fewer sessions than topicals alone, while picosecond pulses break up the deeper, stubborn pigment behind melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Redness, rosacea & vessels
Gentle Nd:YAG dermal heating reduces facial redness and rosacea flushing, and light-based treatment clears spider veins and broken capillaries. This is the concern family Laser Genesis was built for.
Texture, pores & laser skin resurfacing
Non-ablative laser skin resurfacing smooths rough skin texture, shrinks enlarged pores, and softens fine lines and wrinkles by rebuilding collagen from below — true laser skin rejuvenation rather than surface polishing. It also improves acne scars and supports broader scar removal plans for older or deeper scarring.
Laser skin tightening & glow
Because every platform we use stimulates collagen, a series delivers gradual laser skin tightening — firmer, younger-looking skin with better skin firmness over time. Many clients book a maintenance series purely to brighten and restore glow before events. For more significant laxity, radiofrequency options like Morpheus8 reach deeper — we'll tell you honestly which tool fits at the consult, and deeper skin tightening has its own guide.
Laser Genesis — Cutera excel HR
Laser Genesis is a proprietary, non-invasive treatment by leading manufacturer Cutera. At Miami Skin Spa we use the Cutera excel HR to perform Laser Genesis treatments — its Nd:YAG laser is regarded as one of the most advanced cosmetic lasers on the market (you may also see it on Cutera's xeo platform). It gently heats the dermis to stimulate collagen, evening out both tone and texture, and improves superficial concerns like redness, scarring, enlarged pores, and rough texture. An all-year-round laser facial suitable for both men and women who want to polish and revitalize their skin. Face from $300 per session; facial veins $300.
Pico Laser — PICO Genesis
Pico Laser delivers ultra-short pulses of energy in picoseconds — trillionths of a second — shattering pigment particles into fragments the body clears naturally while stimulating collagen. Our PICO Genesis platform treats sunspots, melasma, stubborn hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and uneven skin tone, and the same picosecond technology breaks down tattoo ink for tattoo removal on our Enlighten laser. Face from $450 per session.
IPL Lumecca
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light: broad-spectrum light rather than a single wavelength. The Lumecca platform delivers high-intensity pulses that target sunspots, freckles, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, spider veins, and broken capillaries in fewer sessions than older IPL systems — often with noticeable improvement after a single session. See our dedicated Lumecca IPL page for the full breakdown. Face from $400 per session.
Three-session packages are discounted on every platform — current numbers on our pricing page.
Researching a device you saw elsewhere?
If you've been comparing Fotona, Moxi, Halo, Vbeam Perfecta, or SkinTyte, those are capable platforms from other manufacturers that cover the same goal families. As a factual map: Vbeam Perfecta is a vascular laser for redness — our Laser Genesis and IPL menu treats redness and vessels; Moxi, Halo, and Fotona are resurfacing-family lasers — our non-ablative resurfacing menu covers comparable territory; SkinTyte is an infrared tightening device — compare Forma and Morpheus8 for skin tightening. Bring your goal to the consultation and we'll match it to the right technology.
Safe for most skin types — with the right device
Our advanced laser technology is safe and effective for most skin types, but device and settings matter most in deeper skin tones, where pigment-targeting energy carries a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Nd:YAG (Laser Genesis) is one of the best-studied wavelengths for deeper complexions, and picosecond lasers have published safety data in Fitzpatrick types IV–VI; classic IPL works best on fair to medium skin tones. This is exactly why every plan starts with a consultation — and why heat-sensitive pigment like melasma gets a device-selection conversation, not a default setting.
Comfort during treatment
Discomfort is minimal. Protective eyewear is provided for every session. Laser Genesis feels like a warm massage — often described as the warmth of the sun on your face; IPL and Pico Laser deliver brief pulses felt as a mild snapping sensation, like a rubber band against the skin. Topical numbing is available for comfort.
Who's a candidate
- Anyone with sun damage, age spots, or melasma
- Those wanting to reduce facial redness or rosacea
- People seeking to smooth fine lines and improve skin texture
- Clients looking to treat acne scars or enlarged pores
- Those who prefer non-invasive solutions with minimal downtime
What we screen for
- Recent sun exposure or active tan in the treatment area — energy settings or timing may be adjusted.
- Pregnancy, photosensitizing medications, and recent isotretinoin use.
- Active infections, cold-sore outbreaks, or open lesions — treatment is deferred until resolved.
Every treatment is performed by a licensed medical provider after an individual evaluation — meet the team.
Recovery, by platform
- Laser Genesis: no downtime — return to regular activities immediately, with mild redness that usually fades within a few hours. A true lunchtime treatment.
- IPL: little to no downtime. Redness or slight darkening of pigmented spots fades within a few days as treated pigment flakes away; normal activities resume right after.
- Pico Laser: minimal recovery — mild redness or swelling typically subsides within a few hours to a day.
The first week
- Daily broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable — treated skin is photosensitive and Miami sun will re-deposit the pigment you just cleared.
- Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer; pause retinoids, acids, and exfoliants until the skin settles.
- Don't pick at darkened spots after IPL or Pico — they lift on their own.
Long-term maintenance
Results can last from several months to over a year, depending on your skincare routine and sun protection habits. Most plans pair a 3–5 session series with medical-grade skincare and an annual maintenance session.
Treat multiple concerns in one visit
Many of our clients combine laser treatments to address several concerns at once — IPL and Pico Laser, for example, can target pigmentation and redness in the same session. Other favorites:
- Laser Genesis pairs beautifully with a Deluxe HydraFacial, improving skin tone while nourishing the skin with healthy serums and antioxidants.
- SkinPen microneedling adds collagen-induction texture work between laser sessions.
- A targeted chemical peel accelerates pigment clearance alongside light-based treatment.
- Morpheus8 RF microneedling handles deeper laxity and scarring the non-ablative lasers don't reach.
Sequencing matters — some pairings happen the same day, others alternate between sessions. Your plan is built at the consultation.
Which laser treatment for which goal
All of these rejuvenate the skin — the difference is mechanism, target, and downtime. We offer every option below, so the recommendation is based on your skin, not the device we happen to own.
