At Miami Skin Spa, laser hair removal is powered by two advanced systems: Diolaze by InMode and Excel HR by Cutera. Both use targeted light energy to destroy hair follicles at the root so future growth is reduced over time. The benefit of having both platforms is flexibility. We can select the most appropriate technology for your skin color, hair characteristics, and body area, which helps us safely and effectively treat a wider range of clients, including darker complexions.

The process of laser hair removal is quite simple — a very short pulse of laser energy is emitted and absorbed by hair follicles in the skin. This causes the hair follicles to be permanently damaged, and stops hair growth from occurring. The energy is absorbed by the melanin or pigment in the hair, destroying the follicles that lie beneath the skin.
Because hair follicles are plentiful and not all of them have hair growing at the same time, the laser can only damage the follicles that are currently in their active growth phase. The hair growth cycle takes about a month to complete on average, which is why laser treatments are usually spaced out and why multiple sessions are needed.
At Miami Skin Spa, we use Diolaze by InMode and Excel HR by Cutera. Having both an nd:YAG-based system and a diode-based system on hand lets us match the device to your skin tone, hair texture, and treatment area rather than forcing every patient onto a single platform.
Different lasers excel at different jobs. The Excel HR by Cutera is a top-of-the-line nd:YAG-based device that combines the 1064 nm nd:YAG with a 755 nm Alexandrite laser. Out of all the machines on the market, the Excel HR has one of the highest ranges of treatment options for laser hair removal and is effective on all skin tones and hair colors.
Diolaze by InMode is a high-powered diode laser. Diode lasers generate energy at around 800–810 nm, and the pulse durations are long enough to be fully absorbed by the skin, which makes diode technology ideal for individuals with darker, coarser hair and for larger body areas like the back or legs.
By choosing the right device for your skin and hair, our team delivers more comfortable sessions and more efficient results than a single-laser practice can.
Laser hair removal is not considered to be a painful treatment. Most patients tolerate the treatment very well. It feels like a rubber band being flicked against your skin repetitively. The treatment has been compared to feeling like a rubber band gently snapping your skin.
As a general rule of thumb, the darker and coarser the hair is, the more discomfort will be felt. This is because darker and coarser hair can absorb more energy at a time. On the positive side, patients with darker and coarser hair see results much faster and require fewer treatments.
Both Diolaze and Excel HR include built-in cooling technology that allows the patient's skin to remain relatively cool during the treatment. The Excel HR's sapphire contact cooling system continuously cools the skin during treatment to allow for maximum comfort. This means a more comfortable treatment with no downtime.
The laser hair removal device operates in pulses, and each pulse will burn the hair above the skin. When the hair is burnt, the follicles are damaged. This can feel like a slight sting or pinch, but is not considered painful by any of our patients. It is certainly not an enjoyable experience either — laser hair removal is a permanent procedure and should be taken seriously.
The number of sessions required depends on the patient, their hair type, and skin type. The minimum is usually 6 treatments, and some patients need up to 12 treatments. Most people will need about 6–8 total sessions for a full treatment.
Each hair removal session must be spaced out, which means a full treatment can take up to a year. After each session there will be fewer hairs, and any hair that remains or regrows will also be lighter in texture and color.
After the initial session, most patients see about a 25% reduction in total hair volume. As the treatments progress, the results will get better and better.
Patients with hormone disorders such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome may not see the same level of hair reduction and sometimes need additional sessions or maintenance.
The amount of time needed between laser hair removal sessions depends on the area being treated. Usually, this means a waiting period of about 4–8 weeks between each session, but the exact spacing varies with treatment area, skin type, and hair type.
The exact time you need will be determined by our nurse practitioner during your consultation.
Each area takes a different amount of time, depending on the surface area and the thickness of the hair. Below are the most common treatment areas and how long you can expect them to take on average:
Bigger areas require more time and smaller areas need less time. With both Diolaze and Excel HR designed for hair removal, the process is relatively quick and painless. There is no downtime, although mild redness may be present on the targeted area for up to three days.
A common misconception is that laser hair removal only works on some skin types. With recent advancements in technology, laser hair removal can safely and effectively be offered to everyone — including darker complexions.
For laser hair removal to function, the pigment within the hair has to absorb heat. In general, if something is darker it has more melanin, which is responsible for absorbing heat. The treatment is most efficient when there is contrast between skin color and hair color, so the ideal hair type for laser hair removal is dark and coarse, and the strongest candidates are those with light or pale skin and darker, coarser hair. Fine blonde or grey hair on very light skin may not always disappear regardless of which laser or IPL unit is used.
In your free consultation, our nurse practitioners use the Fitzpatrick Scale to categorize your skin type, and then customize the treatment to you.
Our lasers work on all skin colors and types, and on any hair type from fine to coarse. People with brown skin and people with black skin are great candidates for laser hair removal. The combination of Diolaze by InMode and Excel HR by Cutera lets us safely, effectively, and quickly remove hair from any skin color.
The only patients laser hair removal will not work for are those with specific medical reasons — never because of skin color or hair type. Those reasons are always discussed by our nurses during the consultation.
Hair removal, when performed by licensed providers with appropriate medical-grade equipment, is safe. Many at-home laser removal devices exist, but many are not FDA-approved and can cause bodily harm. If you're seeing a professional to have hair removed, you should always know you're in good hands.
To operate a laser on a person, significant training must first be done. At Miami Skin Spa, each of our nurses is first trained for laser safety, and then trained on each manufacturer's device to optimally operate their laser hair removal machines.
The Excel HR by Cutera maximizes patient comfort and safety while protecting the skin from over-treatment or under-treatment. Its sapphire contact cooling system continuously cools the skin during treatment, and with the added benefit of a targeting gel, the treatment is safe and efficacious.
During the treatment, you will be provided with laser safety goggles to wear. Wearing them during your procedure prevents any potential damage to the eye that may be caused by the laser.
Laser hair removal is a permanent and serious procedure. All permanent procedures have risks associated with them. These risks are thoroughly discussed during the consultation, and at worst involve blistering. Each of our healthcare providers is trained to a very high standard, and that's reflected in the care we deliver.
Permanent hair reduction is defined as long-term, stable reduction in hair counts observed at 6, 9, and 12 month intervals after all treatment sessions. Most people will see no hair growth for an extended period of time, or a high reduction in hair growth.
After you finish your laser hair removal treatment sessions, and you are happy with your results, you probably won't experience any hair growth for years to come. For some people with thicker hair there will be a high reduction in hair growth but maybe not a permanent one. This can be addressed by adding more laser hair removal sessions.
Any hair regrowth can be addressed with touch-ups every 6–12 months, or as needed. If our patients require touch-ups, we offer them at a highly discounted price.
Hormonal fluctuations, such as pregnancy, may promote new hair growth. Laser hair removal may be done once your maternity is over and you are no longer breastfeeding.
Some laser hair removal treatments don't work as well, and patients are often let down. We would never treat a patient unless we knew they were an ideal candidate for the treatment and would achieve their desired results.
Unlike IPL and other non-laser treatments used for hair removal, our lasers offer:
The Excel HR is FDA-Approved, and our laser hair removal works on all skin types and hair types.
Laser hair removal is not a very intense procedure, but there are proper steps that must be followed to maximize results. Our team will walk you through everything during your consultation.
To prepare for your treatment, please follow these instructions:
Yes — shave the area 1–2 days before the session. We ask that our patients shave at least 24 hours before the appointment. Having the nurses shave a patient is a big inconvenience and will make the treatment take longer. You should also avoid applying any type of creams or oils to the area that will be treated on the day of the laser treatment.
Sun tanning and using a sun bed are strongly advised against. These activities put the skin in a fragile state, and applying a laser to recently tanned skin is uncomfortable. The treatment area should be protected from sun at all times, at least two weeks leading up to treatment. UV sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 should be applied whenever going outside. The procedure can still be performed on tanned skin, but it will hurt more.
Any products that cause photosensitivity should also be avoided. Chemical peels and topical products are all included here. You should discuss any products you are using before a laser hair removal treatment with your primary care physician or dermatologist. In general, tazorac, Accutane, or any other strong anti-acne medicines should not be combined with laser hair removal.
Laser hair removal is a very simple procedure, but it's a good idea to know what to do — and not do — after your treatment.
After your laser hair removal treatment:
Laser hair removal treatments may leave a light skin irritation (redness and/or swelling) that typically lasts only a few hours after the treatment is completed. Any minor redness or swelling will be gone within 12–24 hours. Temporary skin lightening or darkening may also occur. Those most commonly affected by pigment changes are people with naturally dark skin or those that continue to have sun exposure after treatment.
The following steps should be taken following the procedure:
All normal activities may be resumed right after treatment as long as the skin is protected from UV light. Results will be seen after the first treatment.
You can shave, but remember not to pinch, pop, wax, or tweeze the targeted areas. Just let your hair grow and shave when necessary.
When discussing the efficacy of hair removal treatments, the most important factors to first consider are skin type, area, and size. Both IPL and lasers use light to heat hair follicles. Once the follicles become hot enough, they are permanently damaged and stop hair from regrowing without affecting the surrounding layers of skin too much. Although IPL and lasers achieve the same results, they use very different technologies to do so.
IPL technology — "intense pulsed light" — combines different wavelengths to create a large spectrum of light. This results in more unfocused energy circulating around a specific area, allowing it to scatter and be much more gentle than a laser beam. Unlike laser treatments which operate on a single wavelength, IPL uses a combination to cause light to scatter.
IPL hair removal is a gentle and effective treatment. It can also be used to treat facial flushing and rosacea very well. Most patients will need between six to eight sessions of IPL removal before they see permanent hair reduction. For more on this technology, see our dedicated IPL service page.
Energy, frequency, and hair color are all determining factors in the efficacy of treatment. A professional will be able to determine which mode of light treatment is optimal for each patient. Because lasers are much more direct and precise than IPL methods of delivery, the overall exposure to these wavelengths is much lower than IPL. Laser hair removal with the Excel HR is virtually pain-free, whereas IPL hair removal causes medium pain.
Anyone considering getting their hair permanently removed needs to choose the right treatment. There are a lot of manufacturers and medical spas out there claiming to be the best, but even though these companies all offer the same service, the technology being used couldn't be more different.
The gold standard in laser technology and aesthetic devices is Cutera. The Excel HR by Cutera is considered one of the safest and most effective machines on the market. One of its many benefits is its superior cooling, which makes the process as pain-free as possible.
The average person uses 7,848 gallons of water for shaving each year, whereas 0 gallons are used when getting laser hair removal with Excel HR. You also waste over 130 minutes of your time each month shaving unwanted hair, and shaving supplies cost over $10,000 over a lifetime.
The average woman shaves almost 8,000 times in her lifetime, over the course of approximately 50 years. If a shaving session takes 10 minutes, that's about 60 days of your life spent shaving. This process can be avoided with just 6–8 sessions of laser hair removal. Some people may require the occasional touch up over the course of their lifetime — but it's a no-brainer.
With laser hair removal, you can save time, money, and the planet while eliminating hair growth — and never have to deal with razor burns, razor cuts, or ingrown hairs (also called pseudofolliculitis barbae) from shaving or waxing again.
It's impossible to just zap all of your hair at once and never worry about it again. There are a couple of reasons why you need to visit a specialist more than once. Not all hair follicles are active at the same time — for the laser to work there has to be hair, and because there is not always hair in each and every follicle, the laser will miss some each session. The cycle takes a month to complete on average, which is why laser treatments are usually spaced out by a month.
There are plenty of laser hair removal machines on the market, and most are less effective than nd:YAG and modern diode systems. Here is the landscape:
The ruby laser is one of the oldest lasers for hair reduction. It uses a short wavelength (694 nm) and is most effective on individuals with fine skin and lighter hair colors. It cannot be used on individuals with contrasting hair and skin combinations.
The alexandrite laser is one of the most popular systems available. It can treat large areas relatively quickly — for example, a whole back can be treated in as little as 30 minutes. The downside is the discomfort. Alexandrite lasers are infamous for being among the most painful types and for causing more side effects such as blistering or hyperpigmentation. It operates at a wavelength of 755 nm and uses ultra-short pulses.
Diode lasers use microchips and semiconductors to generate laser energy at around 800–810 nm. The pulse durations are long enough to be fully absorbed by the skin, which makes diode technology ideal for individuals with darker, more coarse hair and skin types. Diolaze by InMode is a diode platform.
The nd:YAG system represents the innovation used in the laser hair removal sphere. The nd:YAG operates at 1064 nm. Before treatment, a lotion is spread over the area to allow the laser to specifically target the hair. This system is effective for all skin types and hair combinations. The Excel HR by Cutera combines an nd:YAG with a 755 nm Alexandrite in a single platform.
By offering both Diolaze (diode) and Excel HR (nd:YAG + Alexandrite), our team has the broadest possible toolkit to match the right wavelength to your skin and hair.
Laser hair removal should be considered an investment. The cost varies, but most patients can expect to pay $150–$450 per treatment. The price is always discussed beforehand with our team during your free consultation.
The total cost is determined by the number of treatments necessary. For some patients with thicker hair, more treatments will be required. Other factors are reflected in the cost, such as treatment size, skin type, and overall difficulty of the procedure.
At Miami Skin Spa, all of our treatments are customized to your hair type, density, and goals. It's hard to provide accurate pricing without seeing you in person. We currently offer free consultations with free on-site parking, so when you come in to see one of our nurse practitioners, they can assess you and provide a customized treatment plan with pricing.
We only use the best and most expensive machinery to ensure the quickest, safest, and most effective results. Many other places will be cheaper, but you'll be required to come in more often to achieve the same results.
Full body hair removal is considered on a patient-by-patient basis. Having many areas treated at once will lower the overall cost, as it is much faster — you wouldn't pay the total of all individual areas, we package them together and add additional discounts to offset the cost.
Laser hair removal is an expensive but permanent procedure. After decades of performing this treatment, our team understands this very well. That's why Miami Skin Spa offers interest-free financing via CareCredit, allowing you to pay for the treatment over the course of 6, 12, or 18 months.
When considering laser hair removal vs. shaving, see it like plastic surgery. As Rebecca M. Herzig wrote in *Plucked: A History of Hair Removal*: "American women who shave (a relatively inexpensive way to remove hair) will spend, on average, more than $10,000 and nearly two entire months of their lives simply managing unwanted hair. The woman who waxes once or twice a month will spend more than $23,000 over the course of her lifetime."
When it comes to cosmetic procedures that will enhance your life, you never go bargain hunting. You can't replace your skin, so treat it with care and choose a provider who delivers excellence.
We start with a thorough consultation to assess your skin type, hair texture, and target areas. During treatment, we use either Diolaze or Excel HR based on the combination of skin tone, hair type, and area being treated. Both systems deliver controlled pulses of light to the follicle while built-in cooling helps keep the treatment comfortable. Multiple sessions are needed because the laser can only target hairs during their active growth phase. We typically recommend 6–8 sessions for full, lasting coverage.

Hair shedding begins within the first few days after treatment. Mild redness or sensitivity may occur but typically resolves within a few hours. There is no required downtime, and you can return to your daily routine right after. Hair reduction becomes noticeable after 2–3 sessions, with fuller results after completing the treatment course. Because we have both Diolaze and Excel HR, your treatment plan can be adjusted to safely support different skin colors and treatment areas over time.
